Rice brown plant hoppper
Caused by: Nilaparvata LugensProblem Category: Sucking insect pest
Symptoms: Adults and nymphs suck sap from bases of stems just above water level and inject some toxins which result in premature yellowing of leaves. Insect spreads in field in all directions, hence dried up patches observed as circular patches called as hopper burn.
Comments: Adults are straw colored winged forms, walks diagonally. Inserts pale yellowish elongated eggs into leaf sheath or midrib. Nymph are greenish straw colored wingless forms, walk diagonally.
Management: 1. Resistant varieties – Teja(BPT-2595), Bhavati (BPT-2782), Chaitanya, Krishnaveni, Chandana, Triguna, Deepti, Nandi, Vijetha(MTU-1001), MTU-1010. 2. Intermittent drainage (Sri method of paddy cultivation is ideal) makes the environment less congenial for hoppers to live, which prefer high humidity. 3. Leaving alley ways for every 2 metres at the time of sowing, would facilitate good air movement and reduce the humidity.
Control: 4. Application of Neem cake @ 100 Kg / acre to the soil followed by Jeevamruth application @ 200 litre/ acre. 5. Using sand / urea coated with neem oil in ratio of 5:1, keeping it over night and applying next day morning would reduce the pest population besides slowly releasing urea in to water. 6. Natural predators- bug, Cyrtorhinus spp. and spider, Lycosa spp.
